Choose how the opening moves
The everyday details
Start with the route through the room. Decide how much clear passage you need with one panel in use, where screens travel and whether a swinging or folding leaf would interfere with furniture.
Check threshold and floor levels early. Drainage, support and weather exposure need to be addressed with the specific system; a photo of a low sill is not a complete installation detail.
Plan the opening as a project
A larger opening can require structural changes and a different delivery plan. Keep product selection, support, handling, installation and finishing in the same discussion.
Compare how the panels move
| System | Movement to understand | Space to plan |
|---|---|---|
| Sliding | Panel moves alongside another section. | Track, screen and less-than-total-width passage. |
| Stacking | Moving panels collect together. | Track depth and parked stack. |
| Bifold | Panels fold into a group. | Folded projection, threshold and daily access leaf. |
| Garden | One or more hinged leaves swing. | Full swing zone and screen arrangement. |
| Tilt-and-turn | Selected inward ventilation and swing modes. | Interior clearance and correct operating sequence. |
Make the home-to-backyard transition the design brief
Start with the route people use, the furniture near the opening and the outdoor landing. Decide whether you need a convenient everyday passage, a wider occasional opening or both. The largest assembly is not automatically the most practical layout.
Compare the threshold and weather-management detail before finalizing floor finishes. Identify the screen, locks and panel parking positions on the drawing. For larger systems, confirm structural support and handling access as part of the project scope.
See a patio system in motion
A showroom demonstration of an operating patio-door panel. Compare the movement and available space, then confirm the exact system and configuration selected for your opening.
Read the silent video description
A person operates a glazed patio-door panel in the showroom. The view shows how the moving panel changes the opening and how the hardware is used. The demonstrated assembly is a reference and does not establish the specification of every patio system.
