Steel and Fiberglass: the differences
| Question | Steel | Fiberglass |
|---|---|---|
| Exterior skin | Steel skin over an insulated construction | Moulded composite skin |
| Appearance | Painted panels and glass options | Smooth or woodgrain-style surfaces |
| Care priorities | Protect paint and address damage appropriately | Follow the specified finish care |
| Common comparison | Panel, glass and installed scope | Texture, finish and installed scope |
| Full assembly | Frame, sill, seals, hinges and lock | Frame, sill, seals, hinges and lock |
Choose for the actual opening
Try the handle and closing action, look at the sill and compare decorative glass under light. If you are replacing the entire entrance, sidelites and a transom may matter as much to the result as the slab material.
Price ranges overlap because configuration changes the scope. A simple slab and a wide entry system with decorative glass are not comparable orders, even if both use the same material.
Bring your comparison into the showroom
Bring a photograph of the room and note what is not working now: light, airflow, access, appearance or comfort. A useful consultation narrows the options using those priorities instead of adding every possible upgrade.
Once the configuration is chosen, review dimensions, glass, finish, hardware, installation and finishing on the written quote. Equivalent scope is the basis of a fair price comparison.
Apply the comparison to a real room
For a front entrance with sidelites, compare two complete assemblies with the same glass layout and hardware. Inspect the painted steel sample beside the chosen smooth or textured fiberglass finish. Include the inside face, which may be seen more often than the exterior.
A modest slab with elaborate decorative glass can cost differently from a textured slab with a small upper lite. Separate material, design and installation in the comparison. The lower quote may simply omit the frame, sill or surrounding work that the other includes.
Make the two quotes comparable
| Check | How to compare |
|---|---|
| Surface | Compare paint, texture or stain using samples. |
| Glass | Keep insert area, privacy treatment and sidelites equivalent. |
| Hardware | Match locking arrangement, preparation and finish. |
| Assembly | Identify frame, threshold, seals and installation. |
