Vinyl and Aluminum: the differences
| Question | Vinyl | Aluminum |
|---|---|---|
| Frame construction | PVC profiles, often multi-chambered | Metal profiles with system-specific thermal breaks |
| Appearance | Classic and slimmer profile options | Architectural metal profile appearance |
| Thermal design | Frame geometry and internal chambers matter | Thermal-break design is central |
| Maintenance | Follow finish, seal and drainage guidance | Follow coating, hardware and drainage guidance |
| Selection | Check colour, size and glass compatibility | Check system, span and glazing compatibility |
Choose for the actual opening
Look at the glass area and frame proportions on an actual sample. Two windows with the same outside dimension can leave different amounts of visible glass. Exterior finish, interior trim and adjoining windows should be part of the visual comparison.
Avoid treating a material as a universal performance ranking. Ask for the applicable ratings, approved dimensions and installation requirements of the system offered for your project.
Bring your comparison into the showroom
Bring a photograph of the room and note what is not working now: light, airflow, access, appearance or comfort. A useful consultation narrows the options using those priorities instead of adding every possible upgrade.
Once the configuration is chosen, review dimensions, glass, finish, hardware, installation and finishing on the written quote. Equivalent scope is the basis of a fair price comparison.
Apply the comparison to a real room
For an architectural living-space opening, compare a section drawing and a same-size elevation for each system. Look at the actual glass area, mullions and the transition to adjacent doors. The material you prefer visually still needs to meet the project’s thermal and dimensional requirements.
A material choice changes more than appearance: it can change the frame-to-wall detail, finish options, glazing capacity and service parts. An aluminum system intended for an interior partition is not an equivalent alternative to a thermally designed exterior window.
Make the two quotes comparable
| Check | How to compare |
|---|---|
| Exterior use | Verify the intended application and thermal design. |
| Sightline | Measure visible framing separately from frame depth. |
| Complete ratings | Match frame, glazing and operating arrangement. |
| Finishing | Compare approved colours and the actual coating or surface treatment. |
