Single hung and Double hung: the differences
| Question | Single hung | Double hung |
|---|---|---|
| Operating sections | Lower sash only | Upper and lower sashes |
| Upper ventilation | Upper sash remains fixed | Upper sash can be opened |
| Exterior swing | No outward swing | No outward swing |
| Cleaning | Confirm the selected tilt or removal feature | Confirm tilt-in operation on both sashes |
| Installation focus | Track, balance and frame alignment | Alignment and balance of both sashes |
Choose for the actual opening
Decide whether upper-sash ventilation is useful in the room before choosing. Then compare meeting rails, visible glass and how easily each sash can be reached. A display makes this much clearer than a diagram alone.
Do not assume every sash tilts or removes in the same way. Ask for the operating and care instructions of the exact product, including any opening restrictors.
Bring your comparison into the showroom
Bring a photograph of the room and note what is not working now: light, airflow, access, appearance or comfort. A useful consultation narrows the options using those priorities instead of adding every possible upgrade.
Once the configuration is chosen, review dimensions, glass, finish, hardware, installation and finishing on the written quote. Equivalent scope is the basis of a fair price comparison.
Apply the comparison to a real room
For a bedroom where you want to ventilate from the upper section, try a double-hung display with the lower sash closed. If you normally use only the lower opening, compare a single-hung unit with the same glass, finish and installation scope.
A second moving sash adds another operating position and another set of balance and seal details. That flexibility is useful when you will use it. Cleaning features also vary: confirm which sashes tilt, how they are supported and which instructions apply.
Make the two quotes comparable
| Check | How to compare |
|---|---|
| Airflow | Decide whether upper-sash opening is useful. |
| Cleaning | Verify the actual tilt and removal arrangement. |
| Meeting rails | Review alignment and lock engagement. |
| Operation | Try the sash weight and balance on the selected display. |
