Retrofit / insert and Full-frame replacement: the differences
| Question | Retrofit / insert | Full-frame replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Existing frame | Suitable existing frame is retained | Old frame is removed |
| Opening assessment | Retained components must be sound | Allows closer inspection of the opening |
| Finishing | Some existing trim can remain | Interior and exterior finishing is addressed |
| Glass area | Retained frame can affect clear glass | Depends on the new frame and opening |
| Best comparison | Exact retained and replaced components | Complete removal and finishing scope |
Choose for the actual opening
Rot, water entry, distorted framing or a change in the opening may make an insert unsuitable. Conversely, a sound retained frame can support a more limited replacement scope. Assessment at the home is needed before choosing.
Full-frame replacement does not automatically mean enlarging the opening or removing surrounding masonry. Structural changes and cut-out work are separate items that need their own design and approval.
Bring your comparison into the showroom
Bring a photograph of the room and note what is not working now: light, airflow, access, appearance or comfort. A useful consultation narrows the options using those priorities instead of adding every possible upgrade.
Once the configuration is chosen, review dimensions, glass, finish, hardware, installation and finishing on the written quote. Equivalent scope is the basis of a fair price comparison.
Apply the comparison to a real room
For a window with sound surrounding trim, ask which existing frame components could remain and how much glass area the insert would leave. For an opening with recurring staining or damaged framing, have the condition assessed before accepting a retained-frame approach.
Full-frame replacement exposes more of the opening, but does not automatically include structural enlargement or every hidden repair. Retrofit can reduce disturbance where retained components are suitable. The written scope should state what remains, what is removed and how unexpected conditions are handled.
Make the two quotes comparable
| Check | How to compare |
|---|---|
| Existing condition | Record moisture, distortion and deterioration. |
| Retained components | List the frame and trim that stay. |
| Glass area | Compare finished sightlines and clear glass. |
| Finishing | Identify jambs, casing, exterior trim and repair boundaries. |
