Picture and Fixed casement: the differences
| Question | Picture | Fixed casement |
|---|---|---|
| Operation | Fixed, no ventilation | Fixed, no ventilation |
| Design aim | An uninterrupted view with a fixed frame | Appearance coordinated with casement units |
| Layout | Feature glazing or paired arrangements | Matched fixed and operating groups |
| Check in person | Visible glass and frame dimensions | Sightline alignment beside an operating sash |
| Shared limitation | Cannot act as an opening sash | Cannot act as an opening sash |
Choose for the actual opening
Use equal outside dimensions for a meaningful side-by-side comparison. A photograph can make the glass areas look similar even when the visible frame widths are different.
If the room needs ventilation, include an operating window elsewhere in the design. A fixed casement does not open simply because it resembles a casement.
Bring your comparison into the showroom
Bring a photograph of the room and note what is not working now: light, airflow, access, appearance or comfort. A useful consultation narrows the options using those priorities instead of adding every possible upgrade.
Once the configuration is chosen, review dimensions, glass, finish, hardware, installation and finishing on the written quote. Equivalent scope is the basis of a fair price comparison.
Apply the comparison to a real room
Beside an operating casement, a fixed casement may provide a closer visual rhythm. For a standalone view, compare a picture window’s clear glass with the fixed-casement alternative at identical outside dimensions. Use the drawing rather than assuming one is always narrower.
Neither option opens. If the room needs ventilation, include a separate operating section in the design. The choice between the fixed styles is primarily about profile proportions, visual coordination and the selected assembly’s capabilities.
Make the two quotes comparable
| Check | How to compare |
|---|---|
| Glass area | Compare actual visible dimensions. |
| Adjacent units | Check fixed-to-operating sightlines. |
| Ventilation | Identify where the room gets its opening section. |
| Large glass | Review approved size and handling access. |
